April 17 : The Day of Serious Purpose Celtic feast day of 'Donan and his companions', seventh century, followed a monastic life on Eigg, Hebrides. The events of this day were said to be foreseen by Columcille (9 June), saying that it would not be fitting for him to be a soul friend to Donan as he foresaw what was described as red martyrdom. This day was named to commemorate their death on this day in 617 (Easter Sunday), killed by a Viking attack. Donan asked that he and his brothers should complete mass before execution. Many places have been named after Donan throughout Scotland.
