Castle Dore

(See Fowey)
A prehistoric earthwork enclosure, located near Golant which is approximately two miles outside of town of Fowey. The Castle is on an old cross-Cornish track and a little difficult to find. Not exactly what you expect to be the location of a castle as are no hills, just a couple of brush-covered ridges at the one end of a field. The castle (although not anywhere near the grandness of 'Cadbury' (See Camelot) was excavated during this century and found to have been the location of a number of timber structures, fifth or sixth-century, which for its time indicates a leader of men who made a base here.
