Gnat

These tiny little creatures that tend to irritate us to a state of madness have surprisingly perhaps been seen as purveyors of good fortune! If someone was ill, it was thought that to open up all the windows and doors where the sick person lay at sunset would allow the gnats to enter. Also known as midges they were thought to fly around and attract the sickness, and when they flew away the sickness went too.

Gnats are also good indicators of weather conditions; flying high, and perhaps in large numbers indicates fine weather is on the way, whilst to see a lonesome midge flying close to the ground indicates a downpour is on the way.
