A nautical belief told that to see a school of dolphins at play around a ship indicated that although the crew may be experiencing clement weather at the time they should prepare for a change in the weather as a storm was imminent. The reverse was also true. As barometers of the sea dolphins have been held in high regard by sailors and generally considered as lucky.
The dolphin, the smallest cetacean, was said by the God Apollo to be the embodiment of virtue, joy and possessed the ability to guide the mortal to ‘otherworlds’. He was said to transform into dolphin form and to have founded the Oracle at Delphi. The temple is dedicated to the dolphin. Apollo was said to have hoped that through worship at this temple man might be guided to a higher faith, completeness.
